How to Use Sunscreen Effectively

Using sunscreen properly is crucial because it provides essential protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. UV rays can damage the skin, leading to sunburns, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer. When applied correctly and reapplied as needed, sunscreen forms a protective barrier on the skin, reducing the absorption of UV radiation. This helps safeguard the skin’s health, maintaining its integrity and minimizing the adverse effects caused by prolonged sun exposure. Proper use of sunscreen is an integral part of a comprehensive sun safety routine and plays a powerful role in encouraging long-term skin health.

To apply sunscreen effectively, follow these steps-

Choose the right sunscreen- Choose the right sunscreen. Your sunscreen should be broad-spectrum certified, mineral sunscreen or contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, water or sweat resistant formulated with high SPF (SPF 50 or higher).

Apply before sun exposure– Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before stepping out into the sun. This gives the product enough time to absorb into your skin and provide optimal protection.

Use an adequate amount– Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen. Use about 1 teaspoon on your face or 1 ounce (approximately a shot glass full) to cover your entire body. Don’t forget commonly missed areas like ears, back of the neck, tops of feet, and hands.

Reapply frequently– Sunscreen’s effectiveness diminishes over time, especially if you are swimming, sweating, or towelling off. Reapply every two hours or more often.

Reapply after swimming or sweating– Water-resistant sunscreen does offer some protection while swimming or sweating, but it’s for a limited time. Make sure to reapply afterwards to maintain protection.

Apply every day- Sun protection is a very important part of maintaining skin health and preventing various types of skin damage. Remember, sunscreen isn’t something that you’ll wear occasionally. Instead, make it a habit of applying sunscreen daily basis, no matter whether you’re going outside or staying inside, even on a cloudy or rainy day, sunrays can penetrate clouds and water, always wear sunscreen in the morning as the last step of your morning skincare routine, each and every day.

Be gentle during application– Gently massage the sunscreen into your skin. Avoid rubbing too roughly, especially on your face, as it may cause irritation.

Check expiration dates– Expired sunscreen may not provide adequate protection. Always check the product’s expiration date before use.

Alongside other protection– Sunscreen is essential, but it shouldn’t be your only form of protection. No sunscreen serves 100% sun protection. Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, carry an umbrella and seek shade during peak sun hours usually between 10 am from 4 pm.
