Hydration matters for skin health all year, but it is especially important in the summer because of the increased exposure to heat, sun, and humidity. Hot weather, sun exposure, and outdoor activities can cause dehydration, resulting in dryness, irritation, and premature skin aging. Properly hydrated skin works as a protective barrier against environmental challenges. Reduces sunburn, maintains suppleness, and promotes overall skin health. Also, hydrated skin absorbs skincare products more effectively, increasing their benefits and ability to protect and nourish the skin.
1. Increase Your Water Consumption
Unlike a majority of our internal systems, skin also requires water for proper health and insufficient amounts of it will cause skin to appear dull, dry, and unhealthy. Within the summer it is advised to consume 3 litres of water a day, which equates to 7 to 8 glasses of water each day.
2. Intake Hydrating Fruits
Besides drinking enough water, incorporate hydrating fruits into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and pomegranates which are high in water and packed with vitamins that enhance skin health.
3. Taking Steam
Taking steam once a week can be helpful to your skincare routine, especially during the summer months when your skin accumulates extra dirt and oil. Steam helps to open pores, letting trapped toxins be released and wiped out effectively. This deep cleansing action can help prevent breakouts while also leaving the skin clear and rejuvenated. On top of that, steam can improve hydration by improving blood circulation to the skin, which boosts the absorption of nutrients and moisture.
4. Hydrating Cleanser and Other Skincare Products
Start your skincare routine with a gentle, alcohol-free, moisturizing cleanser. Select a cleanser that eliminates dust, sweat, and sunscreen while taking care of your skin’s natural oil. Your cleanser and other skincare products should combine components like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramide, and peptides to help your skin retain moisture and stay hydrated.
Some Good Hydrating Cleansers Are-
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
The Derma Co 2% Niacinamide Gentle Skin Cleanser
5. Use Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid in the form of serum is becoming more popular. It is extremely important for moisturizing and maintaining your skin’s suppleness. Hyaluronic acid’s water-binding capabilities help to repair your skin while decreasing early signs of aging. Apply 2% hyaluronic acid right after the cleanser on slightly damp skin and let it absorb completely before moving to the moisturizer.
Some of My Hyaluronic Acid Recommendations Are:-
La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Acid Serum Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate, 30ml
THE ORDINARY Deciem Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, 30ml
The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum 30Ml
L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Hyaluronic Acid Lightweight Face Serum, 30ml
Cetaphil Optimal Hydration Activation Serum 30 ml
Minimalist 2% Hyaluronic Acid + PGA Serum for Intense Hydration, 30 ml
6. Choose Moisturizer Properly
Most people avoid moisturizing their skin in the summer because it makes them feel oily. However, suppose you do not apply a moisturizer in hot weather. In that case, the moisture in your skin will quickly drain away because of the air conditioner or dry weather, heading out it feeling dry, itchy, and giving off fine wrinkles. During the summer, the oil glands secrete more oils or sebum, allowing pimple pimple-causing bacteria to grow rapidly. In warmer weather heavier lotions can feel uncomfortable and oily on the skin. Use a lightweight moisturizer that gives hydration without blocking pores. Look for products packed with hyaluronic acid, which helps to retain moisture. Apply moisturizer well after cleanser and serum and as needed throughout the day to keep your skin supple and hydrated.
Some of My Moisturizer Recommendations Are:-
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer with 5x Hydration Water Gel
L’Oréal Paris Hyaluronic Acid Line Filling Water Cream, Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramide Moisturiser 50 ml
The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser, 50ml
Pilgrim Squalane (Plant) Glow Moisturizer, 50 gm
7. Sunscreen
We can’t allow perspiration and oiliness to triumph when there are so many light hydrating agents available to keep us looking fresh and beautiful. While moisturizing creams and lotions will not leave your skin looking oily, summer heat causes high sebum, which must be balanced with something matte. Use sunscreen with a matte finish along with mineral and broad-spectrum certified, to keep your skin from looking greasy in the heat. Use at least SPF 50 or higher and reapply every 2 hours to let the sunscreen work properly and effectively.
Some of My Sunscreen Recommendations Are:-
BLUE LIZARD Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen — SPF 50+
The Derma Co 1% Hyaluronic Sunscreen SPF 50 Aqua Gel, PA++++
Clinique SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Fluid
Dr. Sheth’s Haldi & Hyaluronic Acid Sunscreen with 1% Hyaluronic Acid Spf 50+ PA+++
8. Exfoliate Twice a Week
Summer means more perspiration, oil, and dirt gather on your skin. Regular exfoliation helps to eliminate this layer, cleaning out pores and therefore your skin to breathe. Yet, it is important to use a moderate exfoliant, look for a lower percentage of chemical peeling solution or mild granulated scrub, strong scrubs, or a high percentage chemical peeling solution that can harm your skin, and leave skin dry, peeled, and sensitive. Exfoliate once or twice a week based on your skin type. Avoid exfoliation if you have sunburn. It will make your skin worse.
Some of My Chemical Peeling Solution recommendations:-
Minimalist 10% AHA BHA Exfoliating Serum For Beginners (lower)
The Derma Co 15% AHA + 1% BHA Beginner (lower)
The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution 30ML (higher)
The Derma Co Repairing, Exfoliating 30% AHA + 2% BHA Face Peeling Solution- 30 ml (higher)
Minimalist 25% AHA + 2% BHA + 5% PHA Peeling Solution (higher)
9. Avoid Taking Hot Showers
While a hot shower may seem pleasant, it can stripe your skin’s natural oils and make your skin dry. Use lukewarm water instead and limit your shower time to 15 to 20 minutes. After taking a shower just pat your skin dry and apply moisturiser immediately to lock moisture in.
